A Playful Paradigm of Beauty

As an artist and lifelong student, I have learned that there is a mysteriously powerful relationship between beauty and play. I graduated from Saint Martin’s University in Olympia, Washington, with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies in Religious Studies and Communications, and my understanding of play is shaped deeply by both my education and experiences.

During my first semester of university, a tragedy took place that plunged me into a dark night of the soul, where fear and uncertainty overshadowed my every step through the world. Disconnected from my body and mind, I started to neglect self-care, withdrew from the world, and felt severely uncomfortable within my own skin. I spent the next four years of my education searching for light in the darkness, and answers to help me stitch back together the broken pieces of my mind and heart.

I found these answers in the study of religious anthropology, learning about the transformative power of play, and its ability to heal inner wounds, unveil profound truths, and cultivate strong and inclusive communities. On one particularly difficult night, as I gazed up at the moon, I decided to put this play into practice. As I stared at the moon, I imagined that it’s gentle face was staring back down at me with compassion. This moment of fantasy became a longer reflection, as I began to contemplate how many other crying faces the moon must have gazed at over the many years that the world has been turning. How many broken hearts, shipwrecks, and secret lovers must the moon have witnessed? Inspired by this wonder, I picked up my guitar for the first time in a very long time, and wrote a song.

During this time in my life, I felt so uncomfortable that even breathing was hard if it was not through a cigarette. But by allowing myself to play, I allowed myself to sing, and by allowing myself to sing, I taught myself to breathe again. What a beautiful way to break a cycle! This revelation sparked a healing journey that revealed a deeper beauty than I had ever known. Playful moments trickled into my life, transforming tasks that felt like mountains into invigorating hikes, and as my heart grew lighter, the world began to glow with newfound radiance. One day, as I was getting dressed for class, a wave of inner discomfort surged through me. In that poignant moment, I realized my innate awkwardness that I felt inside my clothes would forever be a part of me. Embracing it with an equally fierce playfulness, I chose to fully embody the feeling of being seen. If I had no choice but to feel awkward, I would do it on purpose! This confidence of unapologetic eccentricity paints every garment of Velvet Moon apparel, celebrating captivating vibrance and quirky sexiness. The world is beautiful, and to ignore the symphony of colors and cultures within it is to ignore the endless opportunities to be awed, inspired, and expanded. The rising value of inclusivity in the beauty industry reflects the evolution of the human heart, as we learn to love and care for ourselves and others more deeply. At Velvet Moon, there is nothing that we find more beautiful than this.

Each of these groups have been horribly under or mis-represented for far too long by more than just the beauty industry, so we recognize our role as a brand to uplift and celebrate the beauty that our world has been starved of for so long.

Interconnection

Velvet Moon is not a make-up brand, skin-care brand, or clothing-brand. We are a beauty brand! And we believe that beauty is wholeness - mind, body, spirit, and so much more. Each individual has a unique beauty that blossoms under different conditions, and we want our products to nurture each one. Our vibrant, story-themed and statement apparel, is meant to inject vibrant pops of color into the dreariest of days. Our artfully designed graphic dresses are meant to beautifully frame every body type with elegant angles. We create our makeup lines based on concepts and themes, carefully selecting each color and texture to allow for stunningly unique expressions of the same underlying story.
